In one of the biggest heavyweight fight’s in UFC history, Carwin dominated Lesnar in the first round, dropping the champion and then swarming him with a barrage of punches.  Ultimately though, Carwin’s determination to put an end to the fight turned out to be his demise.

“I was committed to finishing the fight.  The referee kept telling Brock he was going to stop the fight and each time I dumped my energy and eventually blew my wad,” Carwin told BumpyKnuckle.com.  “I wasn’t breathing right and pacing myself.  My mistake not the referee’s.”

Noticeably fatigued entering the second round, Carwin says his body cramped up and he suffered from lactic acidosis–a build-up of lactic acid in the blood stream which cause nausea, cramps, and overall body weakness.

“The body cramps came right at the 10 second [remaining] mark of the 1st and I could not feel my legs in between rounds,” Carwin says. 

Left with a weak body, Carwin was unable to stop Lesnar’s takedown attempts, and succumbed to an arm triangle at the 2:19 mark of the 2nd round, his first loss as a professional.

Though he concedes a few changes will need to be made in his training efforts, looking back on the loss, Carwin says if he had to do it again, he’d still go for broke.

“I would still go for the finish.  That is just who I am.”

Dubbed “The Biggest Heavyweight Fight Ever,” Lesnar and Carwin will battle it out on Saturday, July 3 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Lesnar’s title-defense at UFC 116 will be his first fight since July 2009, after being sidelined with diverticulitis, a digestive disorder.

Speaking with reporters at the UFC 111 post-fight press conference, UFC President Dana White confirmed that the Lesnar vs. Carwin matchup is likely for July, though a specific date has yet to be established.

Lesnar has been sidelined since July 2009 when he defeated the aformentioned Mir to become the undisputed heavyweight champion.

UFC 116 is rumored to take place on July 3, 2010 in Las Vegas.

The event will feature a welterweight championship bout between Georges St. Pierre and Dan Hardy, as well as an interim heavyweight title fight between Frank Mir and Shane Carwin.

Hardy (23-6) earned his shot at the title by defeating Mike Swick at UFC 105 in November.  The U.K.-based fighter has gone 4-0 in the UFC since joining the organization in 2008.

St. Pierre will be looking to defend his title for the fourth consecutive time.  Since his loss to Matt Serra in April 2007, the Canadian has reeled off six wins in a row.

Also, in a bout to decide the interim heavyweight champion, Frank Mir will square-off against Shane Carwin.  The winner will likely face Brock Lesnar in the future, depending on the champ’s health.

Mir is coming off a first round victory over Cheick Kongo last month.  He is 3-1 in his last four fights with his only loss coming against Lesnar at UFC 100.

Carwin hasn’t stepped inside the cage since March, when he knocked out Gabriel Gonzaga.  Overall he’s 11-0 with three first round knockout victories in the UFC.

UFC 111 will take place on March 27th from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and will be broadcast live on pay-per-view.

Though Carwin only stated that his opponent “has a good stand up game and can be effective on the ground,” numerous sources are reporting that he will be taking on Frank Mir.

Carwin has been out of action since March, after his bout with Brock Lesnar fell-through due to Lesnar’s health issues.  Undefeated at 11-0, Carwin is 4-0 in the UFC, finishing all of his opponents in the first round. 

Mir made quick work of Cheick Kongo at this past weekend’s UFC 107, finishing Kongo in the first round by guillotine choke.  The victory put Mir right back in title contention, as he works towards a third bout with champ Brock Lesnar.

UFC 111 is scheduled to take place on March 27, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Shane: After all the switches and postponements I actually just took it in stride.  I can’t control it so I just said ok.  We went to the doctor to get my leg checked out and started focusing on rehab and getting better so when Brock is ready I can be at my peak.

BumpyKnuckle.com: Can you describe a little bit how a fight being pushed back affects you (training, income, plans)?

Shane Carwin: Training wise I think it was a blessing.  I have a Grade II MCL strain and have battled with the H1N1 flu.  I would have fought on my deathbed but I think all things happen for a reason.

Financially, I have made more money this year then any other year of fighting.  My management company has structured my deals so I get paid if I fight or not.  They really have changed my family’s life for the better. 

The only impact is waiting and I think waiting for your dream opportunity is a good thing.

BumpyKnuckle.com: Did you ever consider taking a different fight?

Shane: I was never offered a different fight so no.

BumpyKnuckle.com: Did you ever get any official word on what is ailing Brock?

Shane: My manager was told it is Mono.  I really do not have any other details.

BumpyKnuckle.com: Obviously Brock’s the champ so you have to wait on him.  Is that a frustrating position to be in, knowing that it’s easier for him to pull out than it is for you?

Shane: He is the draw and the champ; I know my role in this fight.  I am coming in to take what he has and he is going to protect it.  I want to fight Brock, I want to see where I am in the division and he is the biggest test right now.

BumpyKnuckle.com: In terms of getting ready for the fight, does the fight being pushed back help or hurt you?

Shane: I think it helps; I get to recover from some injuries that would have plagued me in the fight. 

BumpyKnuckle.com: What’s the one thing that is most inconvenient about preparing for a fight and then having it rescheduled?

Shane: More than anything it is the mental ups and downs.  The physical part is just part of the job but changing opponents and dates is really mentally taxing.

BumpyKnuckle.com: Has anything changed in your preparation for Brock as time has gone on and you’ve studied his fight style?

Shane: We were working a lot on getting up from the bottom, creating space and exploding when we have the chance.  We have all of his fights on tape and my coaches have really come up with an amazing game plan, I just need the chance to execute it.

BumpyKnuckle.com: How have things changed for you in your life since being scheduled to fight Brock for the title?

Shane: I think more people are aware of who I am but other than that I am still Shane.

BumpyKnuckle.com: If you had to give a date, when will we see this fight happen?

Shane: If I could pick, I pick today.  The truth be told the fans deserve a healthy Shane and a healthy Brock on whatever day it is.  I want to let the world know that I belong at the top.  I know Brock is an elite athlete and I cannot wait to test myself against such a great warrior.

In a post to his official webpage, Carwin confirmed that the bout is not happening anytime soon.

“Guys my manager Jason Genet just told me that UFC 108 is not happening,” Carwin posted. “Brock has Mono and what the UFC has told me is that I have earned the title shot but I have to wait for the title holder.”

Lesnar and Carwin were originally scheduled to clash at UFC 106 later this month, however it was revealed last week that Lesnar was suffering from an illness and would have to withdraw. Though never officially announced, the bout was then re-scheduled for UFC 108 in January.

Unfortunately, that has now been postponed as well until Lesnar regains his health.

As first reported by Yahoo! Sports, Lesnar has been unable to train for the past month due to illness.  Though no official word has come from Lesnar’s camp, the illness could be related to the H1N1 virus or “swine flu.”

According to a Twitter post by Carwin, the bout could still happen at an event in January.

“I just heard from Jason. Looks like it is posponed till Jan 2. I had h1ni [sic] myself and I understand how devastaing [sic] it can be,” posted Carwin.

Lesnar is the second fighter to withdraw from the event.  Light heavyweight Mark Coleman previously pull out of his scheduled bout with Tito Ortiz.  Coleman has since been replaced by Forrest Griffin.

No official word has come from the UFC on a replacement for Lesnar or if the bout will be rescheduled.

UFC 106 takes place on November 21st from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The UFC announced today that the bout is official for UFC 106, and will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

UFC president Dana White has high hopes for the card, in particular the heavyweight showdown.

“Brock Lesnar has been tearing through everyone over the last year,” said UFC President Dana White. “But in Shane Carwin, he’s not only fighting someone as big as he is, he’s fighting someone who has ended all of his fights in less than three minutes. This is literally the biggest heavyweight title fight ever and may also be the most explosive.”

The 32-year old Lesnar will certainly have his hands full with the powerhouse Carwin.  But in true Lesnar fashion, he dismisses anyone doubting him.

“I’m looking forward to fighting Shane Carwin.  He’s undefeated and I’m the man who is going to put an end to that,” Lesnar stated.

Lesnar, who now holds a professional record of 4-1, last fought and defeated nemesis Frank Mir at UFC 100.

UFC 106 will also mark the return of “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz, as he takes on UFC veteran Mark Coleman.

Ortiz has been absent from the Octagon for over a year, and is looking to make a splash upon his return.

“It’s like a homecoming for me,” Ortiz said.  “Styles make fights and our styles are exactly the same. I expect a war and I expect more excitement from this match than anything else this year.”

Ortiz will have a tough challenge in Coleman, who is coming off a solid victory against Stephan Bonnar.
