Headlining the event will be a rematch for the lightweight title between Frankie Edgar and BJ Penn.  The two met in April at UFC 112 with Edgar becoming the lightweight champion, defeating Penn by unanimous decision.

Also set for the main card is a light heavyweight showdown between former boxing champion James Toney and UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture.  Couture is coming off back-to-back victories over Brandon Vera and Mark Coleman, while  Toney will be making his UFC and MMA debut.

UFC 118 will take place on August 28 from the TD Garden in Boston, MA.  The event will be broadcast live on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET.

The event features a double main event with two titles on the line as Anderson Silva will defend his middleweight title against Vitor Belfort, and lightweight champion BJ Penn will face Frankie Edgar.

As well, the long-rumored matchup between former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes and Renzo Gracie will take place.

UFC 112 will be held outdoors, at the Concert Arena, Ferrari World, Yas Island.

“This is one of the biggest and most significant nights in the history of the UFC,” said UFC president Dana White.  “UFC 112 is our first ever outdoor event and it is taking place in the hometown of our brand new partners, Flash Entertainment. We are very happy we could deliver what fans around the world will recognise as a stacked card featuring the sport’s biggest stars.”

John Lickrish, Managing Director of Flash Entertainment–the Abu Dhabi-based company who recently purchased a ten percent stake in the UFC–also weighed-in on the upcoming event.

“Abu Dhabi has a long tradition of mixed martial arts, and hosting UFC 112 continues the country’s love and passion for the sport. We really can’t wait to welcome these elite athletes, and showcase a truly magnificent sport to the people of the region.”

UFC 112 takes place on April 10, 2010 in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.  Ticket details and further information on the event will be made available in the coming weeks.

Penn made the news official today in a video post on his website bjpenn.com. In the short clip, Penn states that he feels Edgar is a well-qualified opponent.

“Edgar is a very good opponent,” Penn states. “He’s got a lot of big wins and he gets after it so I gotta be prepared for someone like Frankie.”

Edgar (11-1) has emerged as the no. 1 contender by going 6-1 in the UFC lightweight division, including notable wins over Tyson Griffin, Hermes Franca, Sean Sherk, and most recently a second round submission victory over Matt Veach.

Edgar’s only professional loss came in 2008 against Gray Maynard, who was also considered for a shot at the title. However, despite Maynard’s undefeated record and recent victory over Nate Diaz, UFC officials felt Edgar was better prepared to face Penn at this point.

Penn (15-5-1) is considered one of the top pound-for-pound fighter’s in the world. Since 2007, the Hawaiian has gone 5-0 in the lightweight division, three-of-which have been title defenses. A former UFC weltwerweight champion, Penn is the only fighter besides Randy Couture to become UFC champion in two different weight classes.

Penn vs. Edgar will take place in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, on April 10, 2010.

UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn is scheduled to defend his title against Diego Sanchez on December 12th at UFC 107.

Clinch Gear was acquired by Henderson in 2007 and often appears in the Octagon, notably amongst Henderson’s Team Quest teammates. 

The banning of Hendo’s clothing is the latest indication that he will not be signing with the UFC.  As we previously reported, UFC president Dana White has publicly stated that contract talks between the two parties are over.  However, Henderson’s management has said they are still open to all possibilities, despite rumors of his signing with the Strikeforce promotion. 

Henderson’s last fight for the organization came at UFC 100, where he knocked out Michael Bisping after the two served as coaches on the ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter.

RVCA has served as the longtime sponsor of current UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn.  According to the report by Fighters Only, the company is no longer welcome in the UFC due to their sponsorship of Fedor Emelianenko in his  matchup with Brett Rogers at the recent Strikeforce event.

The UFC’s ban on sponsors is nothing new.  They famously banned t-shirt company Affliction when the company started it’s MMA promotion in 2008.  However, since folding their MMA promotion, Affliction has once again resumed sponsoring UFC fighters.

“BJ is fighting December 12th,” White simply stated.

At the UFC 102 post-fight press conference, White had previously confirmed that Penn would face Sanchez.  However, no date had been mentioned until today.

Both men are coming off impressive victories. 

Penn recently defeated Kenny Florian by submission (rear naked choke) in the fourth round at UFC 101. 

Sanchez defeated Clay Guida by split decision at The Ultimate Fighter Season 9 Finale in his second fight in the lightweight division.
