Dr. Peter Goldman is the man many of today’s top fighters, including BJ Penn and Kenny Florian, turn to between fights. Obviously MMA is a brutal sport and healing properly is important. In this interview we talk about Dr. Pete’s method, called Zone Healing, and what it means to be a healer for some of the best fighters on earth.
BumpyKnuckle.com: You’ve been the best kept secret in the MMA world for a long time. How did you become the doctor so many MMA fighters choose?
Dr. Peter Goldman: Results. Theories about healing are a dime a dozen. One may like acupuncture, chiropractic, or whatever, but the bottom line is what works. What I do work’s and the results are amazing.
BumpyKnuckle.com: What is Zone Healing and how is it different than other approaches to medicine?
Dr. Pete: It is a system of balancing the body, mind, and soul. It is different in the sense that it is true holistic healing in that the whole person is addressed physically, mentally, and spiritually. Dr. Fleet, who discovered Zone Healing in 1931, said that 99% of imbalances in the body start on a soul or emotional level. Zone Healing addresses this.
BumpyKnuckle.com: As a Dr., what have been some of your most satisfying moments?
Dr. Pete: Seeing the looks of happiness on peoples’ faces when they know they are finally healthy. I just heard from a patient of mine from over 10 years ago. She had some significant body imbalances resolved back then and she was just contacting me to say thank you again because after over 10 years she is doing great. That is very satisfying.
BumpyKnuckle.com: What are some of the most common preventative things MMA and BJJ practitioners can do to stay OUT of the Dr.’s office?
Dr. Pete: Maintain a good image of health on a metaphysical level. Proper warm ups are probably important too. For example, I have a patient who is a medical doctor who does martial arts as a hobby. He had accepted the idea that a certain part of his body was weak and was easy to injure doing his martial arts. We talked about changing the image he had about that part of the body to an image of strength. Now he is doing much better.
BumpyKnuckle.com: When did you get involved with martial arts?
Dr. Pete: I was about 10 or so and started karate in Brooklyn, NY. Then when I was 16 I started training with Soshu Oyama at World Oyama Karate headquarters in Manhattan.
At first I joined just for self defense, but eventually I became one of his top black belt full contact fighters and competed for him in the US and in Europe. I have trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for about 8 years. I have trained with John Machado who is amazing and now I train BJJ with Carley Gracie who is also incredible. I also do some boxing and Thai boxing.
BumpyKnuckle.com: How hard is it to juggle your business, your own passion for the arts, family? Seems like a lot to take on.
Dr. Pete: Have good images and stay in the moment.
BumpyKnuckle.com: How can folks interested in learning more about you get a hold of you?
Dr. Pete: Visit www.sfgoldman.com.
