The long-rumored matchup between Strikeforce heavyweight’s Fedor Emelianenko and Fabricio Werdum will likely happen sometime this coming June, according to Strikeforce President Scott Coker.
With two upcoming events already scheduled–Tennessee and St. Louis–and no Emelianenko bout announced, fight fans have wondered if the reported matchup was still on. Speaking with reporters on Monday, Coker stated that Fedor will indeed see action in the near future.
“M-1 Global and Strikeforce entered into a three fight contract exclusive for Fedor to fight in a co-promotion between Strikeforce and M-1 Global, and as you know we did the first fight on Nov. 7 in Chicago,” said Coker “Fedor is now scheduled to fight in June towards the end of the month in America against Fabricio Werdum.”
Emelianenko made his debut for Strikeforce in November, defeating Brett Rogers by TKO in the second round.
The Strikeforce heavyweight title is currently held by Alistair Overeem, who faces the aforementioned Rogers on May 15 in St. Louis.
