In a conference call with reporters on Wednesday, UFC president Dana White confirmed that he is continuing to push to get WEC events broadcast on pay-per-view.
“Our goal has been to get the WEC on pay-per-view this whole time, so absolutely we’re looking at that,” White stated. “The problem is there are so many dates taken between us, the WWE and boxing, it’s tough to find dates; we’re trying to line up fights.”
There has been much speculation in the past regarding if-and-when the WEC would begin airing on pay-per-view, especially considering that Zuffa, LLC (parent company of the UFC and WEC) recently signed a multi-year extension with the television network Versus. Under the new deal, the network will air seven events in 2010, as well as two UFC events.
Regardless, White assured that WEC pay-per-view’s are on their way at some point in the future.
“It’s a lot more than just throwing something on pay-per-view. There’s a lot of work and planning involved in it, but our goal is to put a WEC fight on pay-per-view.”
This Saturday, December 19 marks the 45th WEC event. Headlined by Donald Cerrone vs. Ed Ratcliffe, the event will be broadcast on Versus starting live at 10pm EST.
