The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights Episode Five Recap

The fifth episode of The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights was broadcast earlier tonight on Spike TV.

The episode opened with a look at both teams as they prepare for the next fight.  Thrown in the mix were some interesting looks at Matt Mitrione as he struggled with a shoulder injury, as well as some of the struggles that Team Rampage member Zak Jensen was having in and out of the gym.

Moving on to the fights, Rashad remained in control of the picks, and selected Justin Wren to face off against Wes Sims.

Wren, who trains out of former UFC contender Travis Lutter’s gym, excels on the ground and expected to be able to control Sims.  Sims, a veteran fighter who has previously fought in the UFC, is well rounded and at 6’10” has a distinct reach advantage over Wren.

As the fight began, Wren stuck to his gameplan and shot-in on Sims attempting a takedown.  Sims was able to stuff the initial takedown; however Wren continued his attack and was able to put Sims on his back.

Wren quickly improved his position, gaining the full mount on Sims.  He then just as quickly moved to side control, locking in an arm triangle in the process.  Sims fought the choke and referee Herb Dean had to check to see if Sims was conscious.  After assuring Dean he was okay, a few moments later he went limp and the fight was stopped.

Wren displayed excellent jiu-jitsu skills, coming out victorious and pushing Team Rashad’s record to 5-0.

Again, Team Rashad will be making the fight selections next week as they look to remain undefeated.
