Former Pride champion Dan “Hendo” Henderson appeared on MMA Live today and spoke about his current contract situation with the UFC.
After Hendo’s last knockout victory over Michael Bisping at UFC 100, he has been without a contract and working with the UFC on coming to terms on a new deal. As Hendo stated on the show today, there are still some issues to be worked out with the UFC before we’ll see him back in action.
“There’s a number of issues that I won’t go into, but I just feel like I’ve made a big impact on this sport throughout my whole career and I’d like to be paid for it,” Henderson stated. “I’m not trying to ask for way too much or anything like that. I feel like I’m being fair with things. We’ll see. I’m not in a huge hurry and I’m sure I’ll be employed soon.”
Henderson also stated that he had hoped to have a deal worked out sooner, but isn’t about to commit until things are right.
“I thought we would’ve worked it out a little sooner than this, but I’m not in a huge hurry to jump back in there and I want to make sure I’m taken care of when I do,” stated Henderson.
Henderson has previously stated that his primary goal at this point in his career is to fight middleweight champion Anderson Silva. However, Silva is currently scheduled to fight Vitor Belfort at UFC 108, and UFC president Dana White has mentioned that a matchup with Nate Marquardt may be next for Hendo.
“I’d be fine fighting him,” Henderson stated when asked about a potential fight with Marquardt. “I really planned and hoped on fighting Anderson Silva though, and for some reason they gave that fight to Vitor [Belfort] instead; who is somebody I’ve fought and beat. So we’ll see what happens.”
Henderson fought and defeated Belfort at Pride 32 in 2006 by unanimous decision.
